“Can I speak to you about something?” I asked Chancellor Kragen the next day.

“Of course.” She waved her hand to the chair on the opposite side of the desk from hers. Her inner sanctum was twice the size of my outer office, but she was the head of the college. Frankly, I was surprised she didn’t rate a corner suite.

I perched on the chair and blurted out what happened with Stephan.

Sunlight streamed in through the window behind her, and birds chirped in a nearby tree. For a second, I wondered if I’d been mistaken. Surely something that horrible couldn’t happen in a nice place like this.

Frowning, Chancellor Kragen leaned forward, placing her chin on her steepled fingers, her elbows propped on the smooth surface of her wooden desk. “Are you saying he sexually harassed you? If so, that’s a serious allegation.”

“I’m saying he tried to use magic on me, to lure me to go out with him.”

Her frown deepened. “This isn’t possible. Magic is blocked on campus.”

“He did something, then.” I shivered again at the memory. “It was creepy.”

“Well,” she huffed, pressing back in her chair. She smoothed her dark gray pantsuit that was a shade darker than her hair. “Stephan is a highly respected professor at Ravenmire.”

And I was no one? Was that what she was saying?

“I’m not mistaken about this,” I said firmly.

Her lips spread thinner than the line of a pencil, scrunching her scarlet lipstick. “He comes from one of the best families. His mother is a cousin to the Drudge alpha.”

“Could you ask him to leave me alone?” I said, standing. I needed this job. I wanted to remain hidden behind the veil. But there was no way I could remain here if she didn’t put a leash on Stephan.

“I’ll ask him to drop by for a conversation,” she reluctantly said. Her face didn’t soften. She nearly snapped the pen she clutched in her hand.

“Thank you.”

I returned to my office, shutting the Chancellor’s door behind me. Sitting at my desk, I cupped my face in my hands and sighed.
